“I worked as an order picker at a warehouse, where I physically picked up all the online orders: from pens and paper to office furniture. It was a very physical job, and maybe I shouldn’t have taken it, but it’s tough to find a job in these small towns—you have to travel out to get work.
“So I got hurt. Nothing hit me, but I suffered from bending down and picking up stuff 11 hours a day. I developed bursitis, an inflammation of the hip. I went to doctors, I did physical therapy, and now I’m on pain management. I have a TENS unit that puts electrodes on my body to help with the pain. I had health insurance from work, but they gave me six months to get back to work before saying, ‘No more insurance for you’ and cut me off. That’s bullshit, because you can’t put a time limit on healing your body. They don’t care. You are just a number for these companies—you are replaceable.”
